Photo Essay: Everyday life in Porto
Spreading uphill from the banks of the Douro river, Porto is a beautiful city with many fine views such as the one from the 18th century Virtudes Promenade. Back in the day, this was one of the city’s most fashionable places to take a stroll and is still popular with tourists and residents alike although some, like this group of card players and spectators, have seen it all before and are more interested in the game than the view.
Elsewhere in the city, Porto residents get together in the streets to play cards and socialise, oblivious to the tourists milling around them and the nearby cathedral.
Just around the corner, neighbours bring their chairs out to the street for a spot of people watching.
This selection of scenes from Porto was inspired by this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge, ‘Everyday Life’. You can see other interpretations of the theme by clicking here.

I love the way they do that in Spain and Portugal – sit outside their front doors watching the world go by and perhaps having a chat with anyone who feels the urge – people-watching is so interesting!
Isn’t it just!

I love the way that many old folk sit outside their front doors, on chairs, watching the world go by! They do the same here in Spain.
Great photos, Julie.
Thanks, Marianne. I agree – it beats watching TV, anyway.
