View of beach, cliffs and sea from Albufeira

Albufeira is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Algarve, thanks to its expansive golden sands and central location. It’s also one of the easiest places to get wrong. The difference between a relaxed beach stay and a noisy, frustrating one often comes down to where you base yourself.

If you’re not sure whether to stay in the old town, near the marina or further out by the beaches, this should help. I’ve visited Albufeira multiple times and have seen how different the experience can feel depending on location.

Below you’ll find a small selection of reliable hotels, apartments and villas, along with tips on which areas make for an enjoyable stay, depending on what you’re looking for.

If you’re still deciding whether Albufeira is the right place to base yourself, you might want to compare it with other parts of the region first. See my guide to where to stay in the Algarve or, if you’re planning a wider trip, where to stay in Portugal.

Areas that tend to work well:

  • Old Town – best for first-time visits, walkable, easy beach access, but can be noisy at night
  • Marina – quieter, good for boat trips, but less atmosphere
  • Praia da Falésia – better for a calmer beach stay
  • Olhos de Água – fishing village with a small beach, good for families

Areas to be careful with:

  • The Strip (Areias de São João) – nightlife-heavy, loud into the early hours
  • Montechoro – similar vibe, slightly cheaper but still busy

If you’re weighing up Albufeira against other Algarve destinations, it’s worth comparing areas before you choose accommodation — the overall feel can vary quite a bit.

5 star Albufeira hotels

There is quite a choice of 5 star hotels in Albufeira although none are particularly close to the centre of the town. They have wonderful seaside locations but if you want to explore Albufeira’s sights and attractions then transport is necessary.

W Algarve

Bedroom at W Algarve Hotel with ornate lace patterned glass
Bedroom at W Algarve Hotel, Albufeira

A modern 5-star resort with strong design, multiple pools and full facilities, set slightly outside the centre. It’s one of the more polished luxury options in the area.

I’d choose this if you want a resort-style stay and don’t mind relying on transport. Choose a room to suit you.

Luxury villas in Albufeira

A small collection of villas set in landscaped gardens near Falésia beach, offering more space and privacy than a hotel.

This works well if you’re travelling as a family or want a quieter base as it’s 3 km from Albufeira Old Town. Check availability and prices

4 star hotels in Albufeira

Beach and sea view from Hotel Sol e Mar, Albufeira

Right on the beach in the old town, with balconies overlooking the sea. Location is the main advantage here.

I’d pick this if you want to be close to everything and don’t mind some noise, especially in peak season. It’s not the best choice if you have a car. Check availability and prices

Poolside and bar with gardens at rear at the Falésia Hotel, Albufeira.
Poolside and bar at the Falésia Hotel, Albufeira.

An adults-only hotel set away from the centre, with gardens, pools and easy access to Falésia beach. It’s noticeably quieter than staying in town.

This suits you if you want a more relaxed stay and are happy to be outside Albufeira itself. Check availability and prices

Once you’ve got accommodation sorted, you can start planning how to spend your time. See my guide to things to do in Albufeira and things to do in the Algarve.

3 star Albufeira hotels & apartments

A smaller hotel overlooking the marina, with parking and a calmer feel than the old town. It’s an easy walk into the centre without being right in it.

I’d go for this if you want something practical and less hectic. See available accommodation options for your dates

Located near Olhos de Água, this hotel offers a quieter base with sea views and good value for money.

This works well if you prefer a more relaxed area and don’t need to stay in central Albufeira. Check availability and prices

Simple, well-located apartments close to the beach with excellent views. Not overly luxurious, but consistently reliable.

I’d choose this if location matters more than extras. Check availability and prices

FAQs about staying in Albufeira

What is the best area to stay in Albufeira?

For most people, the old town is the easiest base, but it can be noisy. For a quieter stay, Falésia or Olhos de Água are usually better options, especially if you have a car.

Is Albufeira too noisy to stay in?

It depends where you stay. The Strip and parts of the old town can be loud, especially in summer, but there are quieter areas nearby.

How many nights should I stay in Albufeira?

Most people stay 2–4 nights. Longer stays usually involve exploring other parts of the Algarve.

Do I need a car in Albufeira?

Not if you stay centrally. You’ll need one if you choose accommodation further out or want to explore the region.

If you’re still unsure how Albufeira fits into your overall Algarve plans, especially when comparing it with places like Lagos, Tavira or Faro, it’s worth getting that clear before booking accommodation.
