Beautiful Minho countryside and beach near Montedor. Minho self-guided walking holiday

It’s no secret that I am deeply in love with the Minho region of Portugal, specifically the Alto Minho. This is the very top left hand corner of Portugal, between the Lima and Minho rivers.

Within this relatively small patch of Northern Portugal, you’ve got gorgeous unpoilt beaches, medieval castles and fortresses, Celtic settlements, Baroque and Romanesque churches, Roman roads and ruins, delightful riverside towns and beautiful countryside in between.

What’s not to love? If you want to get a well-rounded taste of what the Minho has to offer, this self-guided holiday covers all bases.

Cycle from Viana do Castelo along the Lima River to Ponte de Lima then walk north along the ancient Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail to the northern border town of Valença. Follow the River Minho east to its mouth at Caminha then discover the varied coastline on your way south back to Viana do Castelo.
