If you’re looking for a great hotel on São Miguel Island, Azores, you’ll be spoilt for choice. I’ve used Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital, as a base for exploring by car. If you’re not driving or using private tours, this is likely to be your most convenient base in terms of access to public transport and group tours.
However, if you’re looking to pick a spot to unwind in, you can venture further afield, such as the delightful village of Furnas or a more coastal location.

The stunning views of this nature hotel certainly catch your eye, alongside the two pools, lovely garden and an excellent restaurant. The rooms are spacious and you get charming sea views with some rooms.

These suites and villas are right on the ocean doorstep, and just 15 minutes by car from the centre of Ponta Delgada. With bright, modern decoration throughout and open all year outdoor pool, it’s the perfect place to re-charge those batteries. If you’re looking for a more central hotel in the capital city, then take a look at this one. With great views of the marina, this hotel is vibrant and wonderfully located to explore Ponta Delgada. Located in Vale das Furnas, this is a tranquil boutique hotel with two thermal pools, a spa and free parking. The rooms have a blend of modern and traditional decorative styles and the spa is the perfect way to re-invigorate yourself with a wide range of treatments.

This eco-friendly beach resort, on the north side of the island in Ribeira Grande, has lovely views of the mountains and sea plus direct access to the black sands of Areal de Santa Barbara Beach. Casa das Palmeiras Charming House – Azores 1901
Located in the middle of Ponta Delgada, this guesthouse is a lovely restored house with comfortable rooms and decent-sized bathrooms. It’s ideal for walking around the town but be aware that you’ll need to climb stairs to get to the rooms. Check prices.
A grand historical building with a welcoming terrace and garden. The host, Maria, is extremely friendly and the property is kept spotless. There are common areas if you feel like interacting with others and it’s really close to the market and cafes. See availability.
This lovely boutique hotel has bright spacious rooms, comfy beds and is perfectly placed to explore the town. The pleasant courtyard is a nice place to relax but be aware; it’s an old house with no elevator and possibly three flights of stairs to climb. Book for your dates.
