Santa Barbara Gardens at night, Braga, Portugal

There are so many things to see and do in Braga and the surrounding area that it’s well worth staying overnight. Here are my recommendations for the best places to stay in Braga, from superb hotels to comfortable guesthouses. Not forgetting spacious apartments for when you want a little more independence.

I’ve spent a lot of time and many, many nights in Braga over the past 16 or so years, which has enabled me to create an informed, insightful guide to help you choose the right accommodation for your needs.

What you’ll find here are my top picks for Braga hotels, boutique guesthouses and apartments. Most are within the historical centre of the city, meaning you won’t need a car and can easily walk to the sights, although some lodgings are a little further afield.

Braga Hotels

Sleeping in a former hospital may not be everyone’s cup of tea but the building, which dates back to 1508, looks more like a palace and is now a stunning 4-star hotel, with all modern comforts. Marvel at the original vaulted ceilings and the cloistered gardens or relax in one of the indoor or outdoor pools or the spa. There’s also a gym if you feel the need Take a look at these photos.

Another 4-star hotel, this one on Avenida Central, providing comfortable, traditionally furnished rooms and helpful staff in a great location. It has an outdoor patio and breakfast is good, too. Check availability and prices

Boutique guesthouses in Braga

Domus 26 Guesthouse – B&B

This charming guesthouse is wonderful, and my personal favourite place to stay. Just down the road from the cathedral, it’s within walking distance of most sights. The host personally welcomes her guests and lays on a breakfast worthy of a 4-star hotel. Grab a room if you can

Berço de Mordomias

The rooms at Berço de Mordomias are beautifully decorated with lots of light (and the occasional lovely stone wall). Because it’s an old house there’s no elevator and the stairs are quite steep. If you’re planning a long stay, be warned that there’s no wardrobe, just a clothes rail, so this might not suit you. It’s great for a short stay where you don’t intend to unpack everything. Check prices.

Braga Apartments

This grand-looking building, designed in 1922, has a choice of nine lovely apartments some with a balcony or terrace. Tall windows make the apartments nice and light and the decor is modern and chic. An elevator definitely saves on the legs after a day of exploring. Choose an apartment to suit you.

Praça 44 Boutique Apartments

At these lovely boutique apartments you can choose either a colourful one bedroomed apartment with a balcony or a three bedroomed apartment with city views if you have a larger group. All are beautifully decorated and the kitchens have all necessary facilities. See availability.

Choose a stylish and spacious one or two-bed apartment at Signature Apartments Os Terceiros. The beds are comfortable and the living area is relaxing. Although in the center of town it is quiet. Staff are friendly and always happy to help. Take a look at the choices on offer.

If you’re prepared to be staying outside of Braga (25 minute drive) take a look at this special place. Modern Talking is a home that sleeps up to 6 people and is an architectural delight. It’s a sleek and modern space with a south-facing glass wall and stunning home library to enjoy. There’s a lovely garden and a private pool, not forgetting a home cinema projector! Check dates here.

If you’re looking for longer-stay options in and around Braga, then try Flatio. They’re a rental housing platform, mostly deposit-free, that offers lawyer-verified, legally binding lease agreements that can be used as proof of address and for visa purposes.

  1. Great post about Braga! I’m planning a trip to Portugal and your recommendations are super helpful. Any tips on the Portugal visa process for travelers?

  2. There’s also a big number of rural tourism places around Braga. You’ll stay a bit further away, but you’ll gain lots of quietness and privacy.

  3. What about hotels or apartments that allow small dogs?

Booking.com allows you to check whether or not pets are allowed so scroll down the listing to see if that’s possible. Or use the filter to search for only pet friendly properties.
