Santa Barbara Gardens at night, Braga, Portugal

There are so many things to see and do in Braga and the surrounding area that it’s well worth staying overnight. Here are my recommendations for the best places to stay in Braga, from superb hotels to comfortable guesthouses. Not forgetting spacious apartments for when you want a little more independence.

Braga Hotels

A former hospital may not be everyone’s cup of tea but the building that is now Vila Gale Collection Braga dates from 1508 and is a stunning place to stay. Marvel at the original vaulted ceilings and the cloistered gardens or relax in one of the outdoor pools. Take a look at these photos.

The 4-star Hotel Bracara Augusta is on Avenida Central and provides comfortable, traditionally furnished rooms and helpful staff in a great location. It has an outdoor patio and breakfast is good, too. Check availability and prices

For more modern decor and furnishings in a 4-star setting, check out Burgus Tribute & Design Hotel, also within the historical centre. See photos and reviews

Hotel Dona Sofia is a very good value for money 3-star hotel in the center of old Braga. Breakfast is very good and rooms come with a nice garden view. The hotel also offers free parking. Choose a room for you.

If you don’t mind being 5km outside Braga you could stay at the 4-star Hotel do Parque in the Bom Jesus Natural Park. The recently renovated 19th-Century building features a spa, a piano bar and modern rooms with classic design. A wonderful place to relax and enjoy the romantic gardens. Check prices for the best deal.

Braga Guesthouses

Domus 26 Guesthouse is wonderful. Just down the road from the cathedral, it’s within walking distance of most sights. Conceição personally welcomes her guests and lays on a breakfast worthy of a 4-star hotel. Grab a room if you can

Right in the historical old town is Braga Bells Guesthouse. Rooms are spacious and nicely decoarated with comfy beds. Free bicycles are provided if you fancy a tour of Braga at your leisure. See available rooms.

The rooms at Berço de Mordomias are beautifully decorated with lots of light (and the occasional lovely stone wall). Because it’s an old house there’s no elevator and the stairs are quite steep. If you’re planning a long stay, be warned that there’s no wardrobe, just a clothes rail, so this might not suit you. It’s great for a short stay where you don’t intend to unpack everything. Check prices.

Braga Apartments

If you prefer to stay in apartments, Tea 4 Nine Guest House contains several tastefully decorated and comfortable 1-bedroomed apartments in a great location. They also offer free use of their bicycles. Choose an apartment

Clean and fresh come to mind with The Arch – Charming Apartments in the Historic Center. You get a fully equipped kitchenette and the modern apartments all have city views while one has a balcony. Choose an apartment to suit you.

At Praça 44 – Boutique Apartments you can choose either a colourful one bedroomed apartment with a balcony or a three bedroomed apartment with city views if you have a larger group. All are beautifully decorated and the kitchens have all necessary facilities. See availability.

Choose a stylish and spacious apartment at Signature Apartments Os Terceiros. The beds are comfortable and the living area is relaxing. Although in the center of town it is quiet. Staff are friendly and always happy to help. Take a look at the choices on offer.

Booking.com allows you to check whether or not pets are allowed so scroll down the listing to see if that’s possible. Or use the filter to search for only pet friendly properties.
